Camps!

At Peaceful Family Oklahoma, we know that addiction doesn’t just affect individuals—it affects entire families. That’s why we created our Camp Programs, free day camps designed specifically for kids and teens impacted by addiction in their homes.

These short-term, high-impact camps are built on connection, resilience, and the belief that healing is possible. With peer-to-peer support, age-appropriate activities, and trauma-informed care, campers explore hard topics in a safe space—while also having fun, making friends, and discovering they’re not alone.

Camp Programs are free, peer-to-peer, evidence-based, trauma-informed, age-appropriate, and hope-centered.

We offer two distinct tracks:

• Children’s Program (Ages 7–12): A 3-day camp where children learn that addiction isn’t their fault, that it’s okay to talk about their feelings, and that they can change their family legacy.
• Teen Program (Ages 13–18): A 2-day experience focusing on communication, understanding addiction’s impact on the brain, and building healthy, protective behaviors.

Peaceful Family Oklahoma’s Camp Programs aren’t just seasonal or surface-level—they’re uniquely designed to support kids and teens navigating the challenges of addiction in their families, all year long.

We’re the only organization in Oklahoma solely dedicated to children and teens impacted by familial addiction. That singular focus allows us to go deep—creating spaces where young people feel understood, supported, and safe.

Peer-to-Peer Connection
One of the most powerful aspects of camp is realizing, “I’m not the only one.” By connecting with others who share similar experiences, campers build trust, increase felt safety, and take meaningful steps toward healing.

A Structured, Playful Approach
Held throughout the year, our 2- to 3-day day camps offer a balanced experience. The short timeline provides structure and predictability, while still making space for play, creativity, and fun—because healing can include laughter, too.

A Safe Space to Talk About Addiction
Our camps are one of the few places where kids and teens can openly name what’s happening in their lives—without shame. Our trauma-informed, highly trained staff foster a person-first environment where it’s okay to love someone with addiction and be angry about the harm it causes. We honor the complexity of their emotions and help them find language for what they’ve been carrying.

In Oklahoma, 1 in 4 children lives with addiction in their family. Without support, they are eight times more likely to face addiction themselves. That’s over 250,000 kids—right here in our state.

At Peaceful Family Oklahoma, we believe those numbers don’t have to define their future. Through our year-round Camp Programs, children and teens are discovering hope, safety, and strength within themselves—and it’s working.

Oklahoma City, OK – August 16, 2024 – The Oklahoma County Medical Society Alliance (OCMSA) is proud to announce the 2024 Kitchen Tour, a beloved fall tradition returning on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year, the tour will benefit Peaceful Family Oklahoma, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children impacted by family addiction.

Established in 1991, the Kitchen Tour has become a staple in the Oklahoma City community, bringing together thousands of visitors each year to explore some of the most stunning homes in the area. With over 160 homes featured to date, the tour offers more than just a glimpse into beautifully designed kitchens—it provides a unique opportunity to support local nonprofits that contribute to the health and well-being of Oklahomans. To date, the event has raised more than $830,000 for various health-related causes, thanks to the generosity of sponsors, volunteers, and community members.

This year’s beneficiary, Peaceful Family Oklahoma, plays a critical role in the lives of children affected by family addiction. Edmond, OK -- Peaceful Family Oklahoma is spending this week raising awareness during International Children of Addiction Awareness Week. Peaceful Family Oklahoma, an affiliate organization of the National Association for Children of Addiction, is the only organization in the state of Oklahoma dedicated solely to providing programming for children who have a family member with a substance use disorder. PFO will be connecting with Oklahomans this week to break the stigma and shame that often keeps necessary conversations around substance use disorders from taking place, and wants to send the message that families experiencing the impact of addiction are not alone--there is hope.

Locally, for the third year, Governor Kevin Stitt has issued a proclamation that this second full week of February be used to spread awareness about substance use disorders and the children they impact. However, 2024 has brought us, for the first time, Oklahoma Children of Addiction Awareness Week, with a focus on the children in our state specifically.

"Whereas, an estimated 700,000 – 950,000 Oklahoma adults face substance use disorders, impacting one-in-four children amounting to nearly 250,000 Oklahoma youth, and

Whereas, the presence of addiction in a family affects children lifelong, especially amid a recent 67% increase in unintentional drug overdose deaths in Oklahoma; and

Whereas, the COVID-19 and opioid pandemics have left children especially vulnerable to the devastating consequences of substance use disorders in their families; and

Whereas, these children face the risk of struggling with addiction themselves, and educating all Oklahomans about the stigma, shame and science of addiction in families is crucial; and

Whereas, organizations working to help children impacted by addiction play a pivotal role in providing support systems and implementing targeted strategies to give children protective and compensatory experiences from the collateral damage of addiction; and

Whereas, short-term help and long-term resilience hinge on a concerted effort to break the cycle, emphsaizing the impact that timely intervention can have on the future of these young lives, and the future of our state;

Now therefore, I, Governor J. Kevin Stitt, do hereby proclaim  February 11th-17th, 2024, as "Oklahoma Children of Addiction Awareness Week" in the State of Oklahoma.

Additionally, Peaceful Family Oklahoma will be facilitating a Children of Addiction Panel at the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City on February 13, 2024. Participants include Lisa Reed, Peaceful Family Oklahoma; Isela Perez, OK Dept of Mental Health; Charles Gosset, moderator.

We understand the challenges our program participants face, and we believe in the power of joy, laughter, and a carefree childhood. That's why we themed our recent Gala "Be a Kid" – a night dedicated to ensuring that the kids we work with have the chance to just be kids as well.

The PFO 9th Annual Gala, presented by The Barcum Family Foundation and Echo, was an evening of playful elegance. Guests arrived at Oak Tree Country Club with hearts full of generosity, ready to support our mission while having a blast themselves.

The theme was beautifully reflected in the decor, with vibrant colors and whimsical decorations that transported everyone back to their own childhoods. From gumball machines to fidgets to whimsical balloon arrangements, the atmosphere was one of pure delight.

The Chicasaw Nation generously sponsored the live auction, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on exclusive items and experiences, all with the aim of bringing smiles and hope to children and teens.

The silent auction also played a pivotal role, with guests participating wholeheartedly, knowing that their contributions would make a real difference in the lives of Peaceful Family Oklahoma program participants.

One of the most cherished highlights of the Gala was the fun photobooth. Guests of all ages took turns donning props and striking poses, capturing the essence of being a kid again. The joy and laughter that filled the room were truly heartwarming.

The Golf Classic, sponsored by Valor Bank, took place at the scenic Oak Tree National. 

Despite the day starting with a touch of morning fog, it transformed into a stunning day on the course.

Golf enthusiasts and supporters of Peaceful Family Oklahoma came together for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie, all while raising funds for our important initiatives.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Nonprofit organization Peaceful Family Oklahoma announced Tuesday that its September 24th Golf Classic is sold out of teams at the acclaimed Oak Tree National. “As Oklahomans learn how much the drug and opioid epidemic is impacting our kids, they are stepping up to help change the ending for the 250,000 children impacted by family addiction in our state,” says Donny Hector, chair of the event. “We are excited to have our golf tournament sold out, but the 9th annual Gala held on Sunday evening, September 25 brings an opportunity for those who cannot join us on the course to still help children thrive.”

This year’s focus is on helping children to ‘just be kids,’ one of Peaceful Family Oklahoma’s most important values.

So many kids in Oklahoma face a big problem: when someone in their family has the disease of addiction. One out of every four kids in our state deals with this issue. Statistics paint a bleak picture, suggesting that these kids are bound for a life filled with negative outcomes. That is where Peaceful Family Oklahoma comes in. Through a combination of programming for children ages 4 to 18 and family supports, Peaceful Family Oklahoma intentionally provides care for children affected by a family member’s addiction while simultaneously providing necessary education to help those same children improve their chances of preventing addiction in their own life.

A child’s job is to be a kid. To have fun and enjoy simple joys. Playing helps them take a break from their problems and start to heal. When they laugh, play, and have worry-free moments, it shows them they deserve love, happiness, and a better life ahead. Our program helps create a better future by stopping the cycle of addiction that's been going on in their families.

“The work Peaceful Family does is critical in the world we live in today,” says Mandy Hansen, 2023 Gala Chair and Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director of MidFirst Private Bank. “PFO may be the small light of hope that a child or teen needs to see, beyond their current circumstances, which will allow them to set goals and realize there are options to be ‘different’ from what has been ‘normal’ during their lives. Everyone in our society is impacted (in some way) by the effects of drugs and alcohol, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Helping our children learn to understand this, and how to manage it, is key to their future success, and ours, as a society.”

In summary, offering free services to children impacted by addiction is essential due to the stigma, shame, and secretive nature of the disease. It ensures accessibility, confidentiality, and helps combat the associated stigma, while also promoting equal access and breaking the cycle of addiction and poverty. Ultimately, free services provide a pathway for early intervention, support, and improved outcomes for these vulnerable children.

Our gala brings together community leaders and influencers with the common goal of bringing help, hope, and healing to Oklahoma’s children impacted by family addiction.

The Oklahoman recently reported that according to the latest Kids Count annual report published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Oklahoma has experienced a decline in rankings across various categories related to child well-being. Comparing to 2022, Oklahoma has fallen six spots and currently ranks 46th in measures of economics, education, health, family, and community.

The data reveals that Oklahoma's rankings for child well-being in 2023 are as follows:

• Overall well-being: 46 (previously 40)
• Economics: 38 (previously 32)
• Education: 49 (previously 45)
• Health: 37 (previously 42)
• Family and Community: 43 (previously 41)

The Oklahoma Policy Institute, the local Kids Count affiliate, noted that the state only ranked in the top half of states in terms of the percentage of children living in households spending over 30% of their income on housing. However, this is still a concern as housing costs continue to be problematic for one in four Oklahoma families.

The report highlights that the only improvement in rankings was in children's health, which is attributed to Oklahoma's Medicaid expansion. However, there are still 75,000 children without health insurance in the state. Overall, the report suggests that consistent and sustained investments in programs and services are urgently needed in Oklahoma to improve child well-being and provide a better future for children in the state.

Peaceful Family Oklahoma has proven to drastically improve the wellbeing of the children who complete our program. We know that the 1 in 4 children impacted by a caregiver's substance use disorder struggle with at least one measure of child well being mentioned above, and that without intervention, these children are eight times as likely to struggle with a substance use disorder at some point in their life. Peaceful Family Oklahoma can help, with 85% of children who graduated from the Children's Program in 2020-2021 improving their ability to manage stressors and challenges. According to the CDC, recovery from child maltreatment for even one-in-four graduates means a $210,012 saved in lifetime costs per child, meaning that the 493 graduates of PFO's intensive programs have amounted to at least a $24.6 million savings for the state of Oklahoma. By keeping our programming free, we reduce the barriers to families seeking to change this narrative for the children in the state of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma City, OK – February 12, 2023- During the week of February 12-18, Oklahoma joins the international campaign to bring awareness to the epidemic of children living with addiction in their homes. Children of Addiction Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA) in more than nine countries worldwide, includes statewide efforts by nonprofit organization Peaceful Family Oklahoma (PFO).

According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, Oklahomans struggle with addiction at staggering rates, with an increase in drug overdose deaths of 91% from 2003-2018. Since the pandemic, the number has continued to rise with methamphetamine and fentanyl as the leading substances. One-in-four children is growing up in a household with addiction. Without support, they are eight-times more likely to develop an addiction themselves. Peaceful Family Oklahoma encourages Oklahomans to join efforts to bring children of addiction the help, hope and healing needed to break the cycle of addiction.

“Kids and teens can heal from the impact of addiction in their families with the right support and services,” Lisa Reed, President and Executive Director of PFO said. “By bringing awareness, we hope to reduce the stigma, help children know they are not alone, addiction it is not their fault and there are safe people who can help. Just like cancer or heart disease, addiction does not depend on education level, income or religion. And no one is naturally equipped to cope with the addiction of someone they deeply love, especially our youngest Oklahomans.”

While recovery programs focus on the person with the disease of addiction, Peaceful Family Oklahoma is focused on the children who need support when families struggle with addiction. Their free evidence-based, peer-to-peer, trauma-informed program was developed to help kids and teens learn about the disease of addiction and works to remove shame and guilt. Kids gain healthy tools to identify and cope with their emotions. Family members living in recovery can heal their relationship with their children. In response to the need, PFO expanded to serve children from ages 4-18 and is now offering an in-school program. “We can become a model for other states. We can do that by talking about addiction openly, learning more about the disease and being a “safe person” for a child who needs a caring adult.”


ABOUT PEACEFUL FAMILY OKLAHOMA: Breaking the cycle of addiction by providing an intensive play-based ageappropriate program for children ages 4-18, and a healing, supportive community for the entire family, Peaceful Family Oklahoma (formerly Peaceful Family Solutions), a 501(c)3 is the only organization in central Oklahoma that uses the US Department of Health’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s children of addiction curriculum. The nonprofit organization Peaceful Family Oklahoma offers a successful intervention program aimed at helping children living with addicted parents break the cycle of addiction and cope with their emotions. Through camps and therapy sessions, children learn healthy ways to deal with their feelings and understand the science of addiction, ultimately realizing they are not alone and cannot change or control their parents' addiction.
